IBM virtualization is challenging existing data center solutions by providing a full suite of zVM, PowerVM, and open source VM to support implementation of images in a tuned to task manner. As part of the smarter computing initiative, IBM has positioned to achieve increased automation of the workload systems management and the computing environment in a manner that reduces costs for IT departments.
The IBM stack integrates software and hardware. The integrated stack is used to create appliances that can be launched quickly to get customers up and running with systems that are customized to their own needs. IBM software stack has achieved a level of maturity that means the systems are a cut above what any competitor offers. This maturity means that systems can run on any hardware platform. Users can design applications and then decide in a fit to purpose analysis which platform is most appropriate on which to run that application. High end, high performance applications need a Unix platform, while multiple images numbering in the hundreds or thousands run best on the mainframe. The new zEnterprise 196 is very appropriate for running multiple virtualized images because it manages 10GbEthernet transmission speeds and supports high throughput.
The virtualization business case includes a stack of application server images that run on layers at a very economical cost.
When the application images exceed the size of an existing LPAR, and there is a need to buy a new LPAR, the economics are no longer favorable and the overflow portion of the application images need to move to the cloud until there is enough workload to justify investment in another LPAR.
In the same manner, workloads that are being upgraded or migrated will run in the cloud temporarily until they can be run on the upgraded system. In this manner, the IBM cloud is being positioned as a transitional hosting space.
In addition, IBM has positioned the cloud as a self provisioning computing platform that offers optimal pricing and better access to users than traditional platforms. The IBM cloud is positioned as a way to achieve optimum use of resource, creating a way to achieve full utilization of the available resources. IBM is able to achieve this because of the good use of storage and networking management in combination with good use of server management of capacity.
